Friday: Review: One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus |YA – Mystery – New Release June 1st 2017|

-DIARY

This week hasn’t been the best to say it mildly. After a month of doing a lot of fun things, I crashed. So yeah, I haven’t done much other than staying in bed all week. My only venture out was to the doctors and to my weekly appointment on Wednesdays. Things are slowly getting better, thankfully, but with being ill my anxiety went from 3 to 10 and I feel that it is hindering me a lot.

Unfortunately I don’t have much to say this time. I hope next week will be better. I have one thing on my plan that I am looking forward to. That will be for next weeks post.

One of Us Is Lying Synopsis:One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them. –Goodreads

-MY THOUGHTS-

I wanted to read this book from the first time I found out about it from another book blog. The whole premise and the synopsis sounded really interesting and exciting. Who doesn’t find The Breakfast Club mixed with a murder mystery interesting? I certainly did. I immediately went and asked for the book on Netgalley, and when I got approved I was really happy.

This book is the Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars (not the part of PLL where they drag out everything and you lose interest before you find out who big A is). It follows the 4 teenagers that was in detention, when Simon, a fellow peer drops to the floor dying from a deadly allergy shock. The death of Simon is suspicious and the four witness becomes the key suspects in the investigation. Who killed Simon? And why?

There is so many things I loved about this book, and it is one of my favorite reads so far this year. This book started of with an explosion of questions that I had to get the answer to asap, why and who? And what are they hiding? This book sucked me in from the first page. The writing was engaging and easy to follow, and the mystery was really interesting. I also really liked the story and the characters, they were amazing. Overall I loved this book and I highly recommend it if you are looking for an addictive read.

There is something I just have to mention that is not negative, but I just have to comment on. As I said above, I really loved The Breakfast Club premise, so I went into the book thinking it was going to be more of a retelling of the movie where one of the characters die at the end of the story. So to my surprise the victim dies at the start of the book, within a couple of pages. The death was just the beginning of the book. So don’t go into the book and think that it is going to be a close retelling. You can see that the author has taken inspiration from the movie, especially when it comes to the characters.

In this book you follow four main characters, two girls and two boys;

Bronwyn the Brain

Addy the beauty

Nate the criminal

Cooper the athlete

(Here you clearly see the inspiration from the Breakfast Club).

I just loved all of the four main characters. They all had their own personal secrets and struggles, and everybody had a great character growth through the book. The story is written in first person, and I think that worked really well. We got to know the characters and the story through their eyes.

As the title of the book says; One Of us Is Lying. They all have their own secrets and reasons to lie, and anyone of them can be the murderer. I couldn’t picture anyone of them to be the murderer, and the thought that one of them had killed Simon broke my heart. I’m not going to say who did it, because spoilers, so I’m not going to say if my heart broke or not. You have to find that out yourself!

My favorite characters was Bronwyn and Nate. Bronwyn is the brain with straight A’s and Nate is the low life criminal. Their relationship was very interesting, and I love their interaction with each other (cute! Hint hint romance). P.S. I have never heard the name Bronwyn before, I always read it as Brownyn, haha.

I also found the character Simon very interesting. I really want to read the story from his perspective, I want to be inside his brain. Karen M. Mcmanus, can you write a short story from Simon’s perspective? Please. Maybe not the whole story from his perspective but perhaps the days leading up to his death? Or some of the other incidents that we got to hear about in the book? That would be AWESOME!

I can’t write this review without talking about the mystery, who murdered Simon? The mystery unravels at the end, and we get to know who the killer is, just like most thriller books. I always try to figure out who the killer is before the book gives it away, and I make up many different theories. Probably not the only one who does that, it is half of the fun of reading murder mysteries. I had one theory of who the killer was, and in the end I was partly right, so it didn’t come as a shock to me.

This was a well written, incredibly engaging and interesting YA mystery novel. I loved so many things about this book. It sucked me in and I couldn’t put it down, I just had to know who killed Simon. I give this book 4.5/5 stars.

4-5stjerner

I received this copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Netgalley, Penguin Random House UK & Karen M. McManus for giving me a copy of this book.

Friday: Update: I’m Back, 1 Year Blogoversary, Norway Trip, Celebrating 17th of May

-DIARY.png

Last weekend my dad’s brewery hosted a two day beer festival. Breweries from all over the world was there to promote their beer, and a lot of people came to drink and have a fun time. In my opinion it was a big success. I attended the festival both days. It was so much fun, even though I don’t drink. It was also very exhausting and I payed for it this week.

20170604_183719IMG_20170527_221217_595Day one my BF was there drinking with some friends. It was the first time I met some of them and they were some really nice guys. The second day my BF had to work at the festival, so I was with my family. Two of my uncles, my aunt and my cousin, and some of my uncle’s friends came from far away to attend the festival. I sat with the guys the whole day. They were funny, and one of them danced really crazy in front of everybody when the band was playing, haha. His moves was out of this world. I want to post a video, but I don’t think I can do that.

The rest of the weekdays I didn’t do anything special. I have started writing for my blog again after a month’s pause. It is good to finally be back again.

I have struggled with stomach ache and I have been nauseous almost every day lately. Maybe I’m pregnant! Haha no that was a joke, I’m not pregnant. I don’t know what to do about it though, I think it might be stress related.

My BF’s birthday was on Tuesday. Happy birthday <3. Unfortunately my stomach was really bad that day so all I manage to do was to force myself to bake him a cake. So all we did that day was to order pizza and eat cake, and watched Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones is really good, why haven’t we watched it sooner?

Parenthood, the new Sims 4 game pack, came out the same day as his birthday. I have been playing it all week. The pack is fun and adds a lot of gameplay and interactions to the game.

Downloaded a house on the gallery for my family that has 2 toddlers and a baby. They moved from San Myshuno into this old Victorian house. The interior is changed, but not 100% finished because they don’t have anymore money.

Lately I have bought a lot of new clothes and things. 3 new dresses, tops, a skirt and a shirt ++, and some new makeup. I’m really happy with my purchases, especially the dresses. I found a style of dresses that I really like. One thing that is kind of funny is that almost all of the clothes I have bought lately are black. I will always be the emo kid at heart, haha. I also bought the new special editions of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone book, in the Ravenclaw style. They are so beautiful, I want them all.

On Saturday I went out to a concert. It was one of my best friend’s band. The band is called Konger og Keisere, and they play Norwegian rock. They have just released their new EP LIV. Go check them out HERE. I had a blast at the concert.

Update: I’m Back, 1 Year Blogoversary, Norway Trip, Celebrating 17th of May

Finally I’m slowly starting to get out of my blogging slump, and I hope that I will be back 100% soon. I’m going to take it easy in the beginning and not push myself too much. I hope and feel that the motivation to write is slowly coming back.

A lot of thing has happened while I have been away from the blog. My one year blogoversary happened now in May. It has been so much fun blogging this year. I have learned a lot and it has been great to have something to do at home every day. I want to do a giveaway soon to celebrate the 1 year anniversary, I just have to figure out how to do it.

-MY VACATION-

IMG_20170521_174232_233

In the meantime I want to tell you about my 10 day vacation to the West Coast of Norway, and how I celebrated 17th of May this year. 17 of May is Norway’s Constitution Day, it is one of the biggest days of the year. The whole country is celebrating together with parades, lots food and fun activities for the kids. A lot of my family lives on the West of Norway (I live near Oslo in the East). I haven’t visited my grandparents since I got ill 5 years ago, so it was a big milestone to finally be able to visit them. The car ride takes 8-9 hours, so I was pretty exhausted when I got there. The scenery is beautiful though, I love Norway’s nature

20170601_214935

First we went to my grandmother on my mom’s side, and stayed there for a few days. I’m so grateful that I was able to see her again. You never know when they will be gone. Unfortunately my grandfather died last year. The house felt empty without him. My uncle that lives next doors has some animals. We fed the lambs some milk from a bottle, and gave the chickens some bread.

20170601_214830

After half a week it was time to leave to visit my other grandmother. She doesn’t live that far away, the drive takes a couple of hours. Two years ago my grandmother on my dad’s side had a stroke and nearly died. She didn’t die but she has brain damage and can’t speak or walk. She is now living at a home for sick and old people. So we had to stay at my aunt and uncle’s house  instead of her house like we always used to do. Their house is on the same farm as my grandmother’s house. It was very weird and sad that my grandmother house was empty and that she wasn’t there. This trip was very emotional and I cried a lot.

-17THOF MAY-

On the morning of 17th of May we put on our Bunads. Bunad is Norway’s national costume/Folk Costume. It was my first time wearing the bunad since 2012. I rarely feel pretty, but when I put on my Bunad I always feel good. It is my grandmother on my mom’s side that has made my Bunad, and it is one of my favorite thing I own. The Bunad is heavy and takes time to put on, and it is very helpful if someone else can put on the jewelry so it looks proper.

20170518_203525

After putting on our Bunads and eating a quick breakfast, we went to the old people’s home to visit my grandmother. I was very happy and a bit nervous to see her again. It has been 5 years, almost on the date since I last saw her. As I mentioned above she isn’t like she used to be because of the brain damage, we don’t know how much she understands. The meeting was very emotional for me, but it was so good to see her again. We watched the 17th of May entertainment for the old people, a guy held a speech and there was live music. When it was finished we went home because my grandmother was going to have dinner.

20170601_214609

At home, a bit later in the day we went out to a get together at the village house(what to call it?). There they served food. The main course was Rømmegrøt (porridge made with sour cream), Spekemat (cured meats) and Flatbrød (flatbread). They also served Bløtkake (cake with whipped cream), other cakes, coffee and ice cream. Lets just say it isn’t the day to think of your diet, haha. They also had several fun activities for the kids.

IMG_20170518_212426_236

After being social and eating I felt exhausted and had to go home and rest. The rest of the day I had to rest in the bed because I felt fatigued (because of my illness, ME/CFS). In the evening my dad came with my other aunt and uncle, they had driven all day to come. I went down to eat a meal with everyone, and after that I went right back to bed. All in all it was a really great day, even though I felt sick at the end.

20170519_172642

The rest of the stay we visited my grandmother a lot. We also visited my other aunt and uncle for a dinner party.

It was a really great trip that I will remember for the rest of my life. I’m so happy that I manage to go and visit my grandmothers one more time.
