Friday: March 2017 Monthly Wrap Up – What I Read This Month

Monday: Today I had an appointment in town. It has been a lot of appointments lately. Hopefully this will be the last one for a while. After the appointment I met my mom at a cafe, and when we finished our coffee we went shopping. I bought myself a spring jacket. I really needed it because it was sunny and hot outside, and my winter jacket was killing me in the heat. Plus the jacket looked really cool. In the evening I have been writing and posting a blog post, and been watching the latest episode of Big Little Lies. Omg that show is good! Can’t wait for the next and final episode, I need to know what happens. Before bed I read and finished Shatter Me. The book really grew on me, and I actually think I might continue reading the series. I’m not 100% sure yet if I’ll give it 3 or 3.5 stars.

Tuesday: Today I went to my weekly Thursday appointment. When I came home my energy level was still good, so my BF and I went to the library. I borrowed Blanket, a graphic novel for the Tome Topple readathon that starts April 7th. I can’t believe that going out twice in one day would go so well. Just a few months back I would get really exhausted and fatigued. Since the drive to the appointment takes around 45 minutes each way, I like to have a book with me. I needed a new book since I finished Shatter Me yesterday, and I choose to pick up Grave Peril by Jim Butcher. I own almost every book in the Dresden Files series. It was about time to continue with the series.

Wednesday: All I have done today is watch YT and Girls. I hate the character Hannah, she is so incredibly unlikable. But the show itself is good. It took me several hours of procrastination to finish up my review and post it. Not the most productive day. I’m on page 108 in Grave Peril. I like it so far. The books are supposed to get better, so I hope that this one is better than the previous books. I also finished The Magicians. It was ok. I haven’t figured out how many stars to give it yet. I also started a new audiobook, #famous. I needed a short audiobook that I can finish before the Tome Topple readathon.

Thursday: Today I met one of my best friends Fredrik in town and, we got a coffee together. It feels so great to finally be able to meet my friends again, and go out to a coffee place. I have been very isolated at home the last years because of my illness (M.E.). Since I don’t have a driver’s license my mom picked me up, and on the way home my brother and his girlfriend arrived with the train. It was really nice to see my brother again, I haven’t seen him in a while. Before bed I read a few pages in Grave Peril.

Friday: In the evening I went to an open brewery at my dad’s brewery. The open brewery means that people can come and buy their beer at the small pub inside the brewery, you can also get a tour where they show how they brew. I went with my BF, mom, aunt, brother and his girlfriend. It was a fun evening.

Saturday: Today the whole family + my aunt and cousin went out to eat at an Indian restaurant. The food was excellent, I think I ate too much. It was a really nice evening and we need to do it again soon.

Sunday: Today I haven’t done much. My brother, his girlfriend, my boyfriend and I played a board game together. After that I went for a walk, and now I’m writing this blog post. I haven’t been reading a lot this week, so I want to pick up a book and read for some hours later in the evening.

Discussion: Book Reviews & Why I Suck At Writing Them

• Do you review every book you read? •

I don’t review every book I read. Last year I only published 10 reviews. 10 reviews in 8 months isn’t something to brag about in the book blogging community. So far this year I have published 6 reviews and that is an improvement. I’m getting better at writing them, but I still have a long way to go.

I’m going to explain why I don’t review every book I read. The short answer to this is; I find them hard to write, and it takes me a lot of time and energy to finish a review.

Here is the long answer:

-English is not my first language. This naturally makes it harder to write in English.

-I have always had a mental block/barrier when it comes to writing (like some people have when it comes to math), even in Norwegian. I used to hate writing, especially in school. When I had a writing assignment for class, I could sit for hours and just stare at the sheet or the screen without writing anything down. My brain was just empty. So I associate writing with something difficult and hard.

-I struggle with thoughts that my reviews aren’t good enough, that my writing isn’t good enough, that my thoughts and points about the books aren’t good enough and that my English suck.

-Reviews often takes many hours for me to write. I’m talking 2-5 hours, depending on if it’s a mini review or a full review. Knowing that it will be difficult for me, take a lot of energy and a lot of time to write, I often push them aside or procrastinate finishing the reviews.

-It takes a lot more energy and mental preparation for me to write a review, than it takes to write other posts. It is more exhausting.

I don’t think I’m alone when it comes to these points. Do you struggle with the same?

I know I just have to do them, and for every review I write it will be easier. I just have to push myself. After only 16 reviews they are starting to get easier to write, and my English vocabulary is getting stronger. Some of my goals when I started this blog was to push myself and do something that is way out of my comfort zone. I have to continue doing that.

I hope that one day I will crack the code, and it will be easy and fast for me to write reviews. But until then I just have to force myself, practice and tell myself I will get better.

When I choose which book to write a review for, I choose the ones that I have more to say about. They are always easier to write. Sometimes I have a lot to say about a book, and sometimes I don’t find anything.

One thing that push me to write a book review, besides obviously wanting to, is when I have gotten a book as an arc to read and review from a publisher or author. Because then I have an obligation to write the review. Maybe I work better under pressure? Haha.

I would love to review every book I read in the future, but for now I will try to write at least a couple a month. Or maybe once a week, that would be awesome!

I hope that I don’t come across as a whiny person, haha, but I think it is important to know what the problems are before you can do anything about them. And I promise you that I work on these things every day.

So over to my question for you. Do you review every book you read? Does it come easily for you? Or do you struggle like me? And what is your tips on writing them?

Friday100+ Blog Posts & You Can Now Follow Me On Bloglovin

It has been an relaxing day, I haven’t done anything special. I have finished up and posted a review of The Final Girls by Riley Sager. Earlier in the day I went for a short walk, I can’t walk too far before getting exhausted, but it is slowly getting better. It is still a bit cold outside here in Norway, especially the wind. In the evening I played Dishonored, it has been a couple of week since I played it last. It is so much fun!

I have continued reading The Book Of Strange New Things. I really like the book so far, I find it interesting and fascinating, but also a bit strange. I also tried to continue reading The Snow Child, but I find the book really boring. Because I finished One of Us Is Lying yesterday (I really loved it). I started a new Kindle book, and I choose to read Shatter Me. Shatter Me was very popular a couple of years ago, so it will be fun to see if I like it. Before going to sleep I listened to and finished The Carnivorous Carnival. I did a lot of reading today.

Since I finished The Carnivorous Carnival yesterday, I needed a new audiobook to listen to. I’m a bit tired of A Series of Unfortunate Events, since I have been listening to the series non stop the last months. I choose to start the first book in the The Magicians. I have high hopes for this series. I didn’t read in a physical book today, because I wanted to spend time with my boyfriend. We were watching Parks And Recreation before bed. I haven’t watched the show before, but I have seen funny pictures and memes from the show going around the internet.

I was very tired earlier today, but it got better throughout the day. I cleaned my closet, and more specific all the shoes and shoe boxes that was stuck at the bottom. There was a lot of shoes that I had forgotten that I owned, and a lot of dust. It badly needed some dusting and cleaning. I found some shoes that I want to use with high heels. I’m terrible at walking in high heels, so I definitely need to practice my walk before using them, haha. My mother and I went for a short walk today too, for only 15 minutes, but that is a huge improvement. I hope that I will be able to walk to my favorite place this summer, that I used to hike to all the time before I got sick. I have also posted a Top 5 Wednesday post today since it is Wednesday. It was fun to write and not the hardest question. Sometimes the T5W questions are a bit hard to answer. In the evening I have been playing Dishonored. It is so much fun, and I think I’m halfway through the game now. Before bed I read some chapters in A Book of Strange New Things. I’m starting to love this book. It is indeed strange, but so very interesting.

Today, like most of the days, I checked on the seeds I planted a while back. One of them has grown, and it is my first plant ever, yay! I’m 100% new to growing plants (in this case herbs), so it is going to be some trials and errors and a lot to learn. I planted the one that has grown in some soil and in a bigger pot. I also planted some new seeds, it will be fun to see if I succeed. I’m growing: parsley, basil and watercress.

I didn’t read a lot today, just a few pages in Shatter Me, and The Magician.

I forgot to mention yesterday that we are dog sitting a Labrador. Her name is Camino, and she is the cutest and nicest dog. Today I had a doctors appointment, nothing bad just had to get a note from him (or what it is called in English? Medical certificate?). After the appointment I have just been home writing a blog post that took me hours to do (like always, blogging takes a lot of time). After that I went for a short walk with Camino. Oh how much I have missed to have a dog. Our dog Amy passed away in February last year. I didn’t read much today either, hope I’m not getting into a reading slump.

Today I was out on a restaurant celebrating my BF’s brothers birthday. It was really fun because I don’t get out of the house that often. I was wearing a printed red dress, my hair was out and wearing red lipstick. I love wearing red lipstick, it makes me feel cuter. I want to buy and wear some more makeup like foundation, highlighter, eyeshadow and mascara.

I haven’t been feeling so good today, a mix of my illness and stomachache. It’s the end of the day now, and I’m trying to finish this post in time. Thank you for reading, and I hope you like it.

Life Update #4

Life Update are personal posts I do once in awhile to update you on what’s been going on in my life recently. What I have been doing, my interests and what is currently happening in my life. You can find the other Life Update posts under “Personal” in the archives.

It has been a really long time since my last life update. The last one was published in November, if you don’t count the Christmas post as a life update.

– My health has been really up and down the two last months. Thankfully it is still getting better over all, and everything is going forward. The cold season has been killing me, last week I was really stuffed up and my body was aching. I’m not the only one with that problem, it feels like everybody has been sick lately.

-So over to more fun things. In February I got 2 new pairs of glasses. I’m really happy with them, and I hope they look good on me.

-Something that I have been thinking about the last months, is that I want to start documenting my life through film. I want to film things in my day to day life as someone who struggles with M.E., and post it as a vlog on Youtube. I started in February with filming some short clips, it isn’t anything special but I have to get used to it. I have to put a February video together asap, Rakel stop procrastinating. And also, I need help, do anyone know about a good free video editing program?

-The game I have been playing lately is Dishonored, and I’m obsessed. Why did it take me so long to pick it up? I should have played it sooner because I’m really liking it. It is right up my alley, and I have a great time playing it.

Sunday two weeks ago, we celebrated Fastelaven here in Norway. If you want to read about Fastelaven HERE is a link. On Fastelaven the tradition is to eat Boller (buns) with whipped cream, it tasted delicious.

Discussion: Should Books Have Trigger Warnings?

I read THIS post on Midnightbiblioblog’s blog about trigger warning books, and I wanted to share my opinions on the topic. Yeah I know it has been a while, but I haven’t been able to post my thoughts before now.

My short answer on the topic is: No! Book publishers should not be obligated to trigger warning their books.

15th Favorite of the Moment #5

15th Favorites at the Moment is a monthly bookish favorites TAG made by me. Instead of doing the monthly favorites at the end of the month. I’m going to do it half way through the month on the 15th, with 15 questions.

I’m almost done with Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven, and I’m really liking it. I’m also currently reading the third book in The Gentleman Bastards series; The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch. I know I have mentioned this series every 15th favorites, but it is my absolutely favorite series, and book 3 is sooo good.

George and Jimmy from Deadlight Jack by Mark Onspaugh. George is an African American, and Jimmy is Native American. They are both in their 70, best friends, living together and fighting supernatural cases. I absolutely adore them, and it was so much fun reading about two older main characters. I usually read YA and books with younger main characters.

Link to my Deadlight Jack Review

And also Libby from Holding Up The Universe. I love her, she is amazing! I can really relate to her and I see myself in her a lot.

The Blazing Star by Imani Josey

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida

All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders

Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling. In need to watch the movie, and then read this screenplay.

As I mentioned earlier in this post, I really like Holding Up The Universe. I have to say I have really enjoyed reading contemporaries lately.

Playing Sims4 and listening to audiobooks.

I don’t have one

The new season of Sherlock. Season 4 so far has been a bit weird and crazy and of course really exciting.

My other favorite tv show is the Swedish tv series Frøken Frimans Krig (Miss Friman’s War). Season 3 came out late December and it is so good. Season 1 is about a group of women in the early 1900, and their fight to start up the grocery store run only by women; Svenska Hem (Swedish Home).

It is really interesting and important to see the feminists fight for equality. The women that has fought for equality, their struggles and how it was a 100 years ago. It is both educational and a reminder how important feminism is. I’m feeling very proud for all of the women who stood up for equality and female rights. It is rare for a tv series to make me so proud and emotional as this one.

Not all battles are violent. Meet a courageous group of women who takes on both the male rulers of the day and a corrupt grocery industry. Savvy is their strategy and cans of healthy food are their weapons. The three hour drama series “Miss Friman’s War” is a humorous and poignant story about friendship and fighting for your dreams. It addresses topics that are as relevant today as they were then: the demand for good, unspoiled food and the struggle for equal rights. Although “Miss Friman’s War” is a work of fiction, the story is partly based on actual events around the all-female food co-op “Svenska Hem”, which was founded long before women even had the right to vote.

His Sims4 lets play is HILARIOUS! It is really dramatic and definitely not PG haha. Everyone that loves drama check his channel out. I discovered his channel only a week ago, and I have almost watched every episode. I’m addicted.

Sims4, I have been playing it again. You guys might know by now that sims4 is my favorite game. And OMG guys, TODDLERS are in the game now!!!

Here are some screenshots of what I have built lately:

This is MR and MRS Lee, they are the parents of one of my sims. They are rich and owns the whole apartment complex that they and their daughter lives in.

This is the apartment I made them.

I came over this Instagram profile; Bri4nh3nry. I really like the small animated art pieces this guy is making.

My Christmas 2016 – Norwegian Christmas

I have had an amazing Christmas, the best one in many years. In Norway we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, the 24.

The day started with me and my brother ate breakfast and candy in bed whilst watching Tre Nøtter Til Askepott (Cinderella) on the TV like we do every year. Yeah we both are over 20 years old haha, Askepott is not just for kids.

We started eating Christmas dinner 6 o’clock. This year it was only me, my brother, mom, dad and my cousin. We ate the traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner Pinnekjøtt, Pinnekjøtt is salted lamb ribs. We ate it with: Kålrotstappe (mashed Rutabaga), Surkål (sauerkraut), Tyttebærsyltetøy (lingonberry jam), Carrots in a white sauce and Potatoes.

Other Norwegian traditional Christmas food is Ribbe (meat from pig) or Cod or Lutefisk (Lye fish).

Pinnekjøtt and Kålrotstappe. Kålrotstappe is one of my favorite food in the entire world.

I don’t eat meat or milk so I ate a vegan Nut Steak with all the other side food that dad made dairy free for me. The food was so good.

Our Christmas three.

Later after the dinner we opened all the gifts under the three, and ate dessert. We always open one gift at the time, because it is fun to see what everyone gets.

I got a lot of thing, all the things I wished for and more. I am so blessed and happy. I got 11 books from mom and dad. I can’t believe they bought me all the books I wished for. I also got 2 sweaters, socks, hair clips, Bluetooth speakers, adult coloring book, and more +++. From my boyfriend I got one of the best Christmas gifts. He had written me a letter, and inside it was a key to his apartment. We have lived together before, but I had to move home to my parents because of health problems. So living together isn’t something new, but it is nice to know that he wants me to move in with him again. His biggest present to me was the blue bookcase I wanted, I can’t wait to fill it with my books. Thank you so much everyone for all the great presents.

My brother handing out the presents.

Second Christmas Day (26 December)

Every 2 Christmas day (December 26) we have a family party at our house. I have a big family (my mom has 9 siblings) and even though everyone couldn’t come, the house was full. I had so much fun, I love seeing my family. We are only gathered like this a few times a year.

We ate the Norwegian dish Lapskaus, because it is easy to make. I ate a vegan version with soy sausages and Flatbrød (flat bread). We also had a lot of Christmas cakes, they all tasted really good. I think I have gained 10000 kg this Christmas.

Me, my brother, my boyfriend and my cousins that is around my age played cards.

❤ -Rakel

-This was my Christmas. How was yours?
